Squatting is when you live rent free in an abandoned or unused building without the owner’s permission. Some people view squatting as a lifestyle choice but most squatters are homeless people who don’t have other choices. Squats are often run down, unhealthy places to stay. Most properties will have had their utilities (gas, water, electricity) cut off so living standards are very basic.
Sleeping in a squat is usually a safer options that sleeping on the streets but they are often shared by lots of people and it’s important to be careful about who you trust. Think about your personal safety and don’t take any unnecessary risks. Always keep your valuables and cash with you.
At the moment squatting itself isn’t illegal but it is illegal to break and enter to get into a property. This would include breaking doors or windows to get inside. It’s also illegal to do any damage once you are inside. Once you’ve got in, the owner can’t remove you by violent or forced means. But they can get a court order to force you to leave. If you refuse to leave you can be prosecuted. Once you’ve left the property it is usually sealed up so no other squatters can get in. Because you’ll almost certainly be evicted in the end, squatting doesn’t give you a real home or security.
