Speculative Letters and Emails

Many jobs are never actually advertised.  One way of finding out about these vacancies is to send a speculative letter or email to employers you’d like to work for. You might also use this type of letter or email to ask about Apprenticeships or other work based learning vacancies.

A speculative letter or email should:

  • Introduce yourself.
  • Tell what you have to offer – enthusiasm, skills, knowledge.
  • Explain why you’d like to work for them.
  • Ask them to consider you for any vacancies they have now or in the near future.
  • End with ‘Yours sincerely’ if you know the name of the person you’re writing to or ‘Yours faithfully’ if you’ve begun the letter with Dear Sir/Madam.

It’s a good idea to send a copy of your CV along with your letter.

Remember to keep an up-to-date list of the employers that you’ve contacted.
