Smoking
Smoking is bad for your health. It’s linked to all sorts of health problems including cancers, heart disease and chronic breathing problems. Even breathing in someone else’s smoke (passive smoking) can be harmful.
Cigarette smoke contains over 4000 chemicals including nicotine. Nicotine is an extremely powerful chemical which is easy to get hooked on. The longer you smoke the harder it can become to quit.
Smoking can have an unpleasant effect on your appearance. Amongst other things it can make your teeth yellow, your fingers brown and your clothes, hair and breath smell stale. It can damage your skin and reduce your fertility. Just imagine what it’s doing to your lungs! People who give up smoking nearly always feel fitter and healthier. It’s unusual to find a top athlete who smokes!
Smoking can also seriously affect your pocket. Smoking 10 cigarettes a day will cost you hundreds of pounds over a year – think what could you buy instead. If you’re under 18 it’s illegal for shops to sell you cigarettes and other tobacco products.
