Raising the Participation Age

Did you know that for the first time in nearly 40 years the age at which young people can leave education is going up?

At the moment you could choose to leave learning when you’re 16 but this is set to change. Raising the Participation Age means that if you’re currently in Year 10 you’ll continue your learning until you’re 17 and if you’re currently in Year 9 (or below) you’ll continue until you’re 18.

Remaining in learning doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to stay on at school.  You will be able to choose from the following routes:

  • Full-time education at school or college (or home education)
  • Work-based learning, such as an Apprenticeship
  • Part time education or training, if you’re employed, self employed or volunteering for more than 20 hours per week

For more information talk to your careers contact in school, call The National Careers Service helpline on 0800 100 900 or follow this link.
