Staying on in education is usually free unless you go to a fee-paying school or private college but you might have to buy books, equipment or other resources for your course. There are some allowances and awards available to help young people continue their learning. If you’re worried about money check out the information below.
16-19 Bursary Fund
Sixth forms, colleges and training providers have funds to help young people who may struggle with the costs of their learning. If you think you’ll need financial support you should apply to your place of learning for the 16-19 Bursary Fund. If you’re successful in getting a bursary you could use it to help with the costs of transport, food equipment and any course related expenses. Young people in most need are eligible for a bursary of £1,200 per year. You should be entitled to this if you’re in care, are a care leaver or receive income support. You should also be eligible if you’re disabled and receive both Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance.
