Foundation Learning

Foundation Learning could be for you if you have few or no qualifications and need time to gain further qualifications, learn new skills and decide what you want to do in the future.  It’s a flexible way of learning that allows you to work at your own pace to build up the knowledge, experience and confidence you need to get on and succeed in life.

What you do on Foundation Learning will depend on your needs, the skills and qualifications you already have and what’s on offer where you’re studying - you may be able to take Foundation Learning at sixth form, college or with a work-based learning provider.  It would probably involve a mix of:

  • Working on improving your everyday English, maths and ICT skills
  • Doing work related courses (including work experience) that build up your skills and experience
  • Courses and activities to help build your confidence and motivation and improve your social and employability skills

You’ll be able to gain qualifications at entry level and level 1 – your learning provider will help you to choose qualifications that suit you.  Once you’ve completed your Foundation Learning you could look to go onto an Apprenticeship, further education course or into employment.

Depending on your circumstances you may be able to get financial help from the 16-19 Bursary Fund.  If you’re a young parent a Care to Learn grant could help to pay for your child care and related travel costs.
