My 2050 - planning future energy usage
Suitable for Year 6 upwards this energy-juggling activity is delivered in school IT suites. It uses an easy online tool to allow students to attempt the challenge of supplying enough energy to meet demand whilst achieving our UK emissions targets.
For primary pupils this can be used to increase understanding of energy generation and usage, climate change and environmental impact.
Secondary school pupils can investigate the range of technologies and the pros and cons of each, government policy and targets, plus the political, social and ethical debates surrounding this subject.
Where does energy come from?
An interactive activity kit for primary schools to discover how energy is made.
Trays containing soil, fossils, gem stones, twigs, leaves and (fake) coal are investigated to aid discovery of the origins of fossil fuels. Fake crude oil and plastic tablecloths are also provided. Pictures of power stations and renewable energy technologies are included to stimulate discussion.
Home energy checks
The Energy Saving Trust home energy checks are a great way for students to find out how energy is used at home and how it may be being wasted. With the support of parents, students complete an online survey.
Each household generates a tailored report and is provided with advice on how to make improvements (including any initiatives and grants available). These can be shared and compared at school to generate ideas and explore common actions.
Food
Why is home grown or locally produced food more sustainable? What is the carbon impact of meat? What is a low-waste lunch? Why does the average family throw away £50 food every month?
Our supported session demystifies commonly misunderstood issues and suggests positive actions everyone can take to make a difference. It integrates well into food-growing and/or waste reduction projects.
Rethink resources box
This teachers’ resource box contains lesson plans and resources to support learning around waste and recycling themes. From simple physical activities using balloons to find out about CO2 in the atmosphere and its effects on the planet to paper-making.
There are activities for all ages and abilities.
Paper-making kit
This hands-on, wet and slightly messy activity is (for all those reasons) an incredibly popular way of teaching waste, recycling and natural resource use themes.
This kit can be borrowed and delivered by teachers or a member of the Sustainability Team can deliver the activity for you as part of a tailored programme of sessions exploring sustainability.
