Medication Available

The initial few days without nicotine are often the hardest part of stopping smoking as this is when you are fighting the physical addiction. Nicotine replacement products can help you through this.  There are also other products available that help with the withdrawal symptoms.

Nicotine Gum

Chewing gum.  Nicotine is absorbed through the lining of your mouth

Nicotine Patches

The 16 hour patches work well for most smokers.  The 24 hour patch is advisable if you usually wake up for a cigarette in the night.

Lozenges

These are like a boiled sweet which you suck gradually.

Microtabs

These are small tablets that dissolve under your tongue.

Nasal Spray

Nicotine is quickly absorbed through the lining of your nose - especially good for severe withdrawal symptoms.

Inhalators

Like a plastic cigarette, the inhalator releases nicotine vapour which gets absorbed through your mouth and throat.

Champix or Zyban

As well as NRT, there are other medicines that do not contain nicotine that can help you quit, such as Champix or Zyban.  You should be ready to stop smoking within 2 weeks of starting to take either tablet.  Prescription only.
