Samples that have been tested

Samples tested have been found to contain:

  • rodent droppings
  • insects
  • dirt
  • 3 x more arsenic*
  • 5 x more cadmium*
  • 6 x more lead*

* than regulated cigarettes (HMRC 2006)

Smuggled and fake cigs are sold through unregulated sources, often in people’s homes, workplaces, pubs or on the streets.

This makes them more accessible to under 18’s and any sale of tobacco products to under 18’s is a criminal offence.  It also means they may be exposed to other substances such as alcohol or drugs

Businesses who allow dodgy sales to take place on their premises can be held liable, risking a large fine or even a prison sentence.
