In accordance with the Health Act of 2006 it is illegal to smoke on publicly used vehicles therefore this would include schools own vehicles and privately contracted transport.
Despite being against the law incidents of school pupils smoking on school or public transport have continued to be reported.
Schools across Lincolnshire are to be encouraged to take a new, proactive approach to this issue by creating positive links with the bus companies concerned, educating pupils around the relevant legislation and dangers as well as creating a supportive environment for young smokers who wish to quit.
Both schools and bus companies are welcome to download and display the ‘Lincolnshire School Bus’ poster, alternatively hard copies can be accessed from Smokefree Lincs by calling 01522 550544 or e-mail smokefreelincs@lincolnshire.gov.uk
- If you are a parent who has concerns about smoking on your child’s school bus we would advise you to contact the school in the first instance or the relevant bus company.
- If you are a bus company that is encountering problems with pupils smoking on board please contact the relevant school to establish a way to tackle the issue.
- If you are a school that has been made aware of their pupils smoking on school buses please contact the relevant bus company to establish a plan of action.
