Sustainable Products Catalogue

Introduction

Making the right procurement decisions can have far reaching environmental, economic and social impacts. Procurement Lincolnshire and the eight partner authorities have committed themselves to addressing these issues through the Procurement Strategy.

The volume of public sector procurement in the UK and wider EU is sufficiently large for it to be able to help tackle a wide range of central policy issues providing the right goods, services and works are procured to support these policy objectives. As such, the partner authorities are keen to show leadership in supporting sustainable procurement initiatives.

ESPO ‘Sustainable Products Catalogue’

ESPO (see www.espo.org) have led a procurement exercise to establish a dedicated ‘Sustainable Products Catalogue’. Procurement Lincolnshire endorses the use of this catalogue as one means by which partner authorities can access a wide range of products designed to support the environmental theme of sustainable procurement. By making purchases from this catalogue, partner authorities are able to obtain value for money and environmentally friendly products which have been procured in full compliance with the EU procurement legislation. Purchases can made directly from the catalogue without the need for any further tendering procedures; hence, use of the catalogue is administratively efficient for procurers.

Product range

The specifications of products are based as far as possible on recognised environmental standards, such as key criteria from eco labels. Product ranges in the catalogue include:

  • Microgeneration Energy Products (biomass boilers; photovoltaic cells etc)
  • Energy Efficient Products (insulation materials; energy efficient light bulbs etc)
  • Products made from Recycled Materials (outdoor furniture; IT consumables)
  • Products and Services for Sustainable Parks Management (horticultural products; machinery etc)

The catalogue is currently in the process of being updated to take account of new emerging technologies in regard to sustainable products and will be revised and updated towards the end of 2010.
