Core List

As part of the Value for Money programme, we have been developing a core list of stationery items in an attempt to reduce the considerable amount of money we spend on stationery. Having looked at what we spend our money on, and where we spend it, we have found many examples of a high price being paid for specific items when a similar, alternative, product is available at a much lower cost. 

The core list we have produced relates to our stationery spend but will be developed further to include furniture, paper and computer consumable items. It does mean a reduction in choice, and if you want a specific make of felt pen, A4 folder or stapler, for example, it may not be available, but something similar will be. It does involve compromise, but we believe the items chosen do represent value for money. We plan to continually review the core list in the future to ensure it reflects the most commonly purchased items and represents best value. 

You should start to use this core list of stationery with immediate effect, because the sooner we start using it, and the more we use it, then the sooner we start making savings. As soon as we have details on core lists of paper, furniture and computer consumables, they will be added to this page. 

Last year we spent over £1m on stationery, paper and furniture. If we can reduce this level of spend then we all benefit.

Paper Core List

Following careful consideration and much research we have taken the decision to change the paper we use. The new paper is a high quality 100% recycled product that has been tried and tested and is the paper of choice for:  Dept of Education, Dept of Work and Pensions and HMRC

Why Buy Recycled?

Each 20 cases of recycled paper saves 17 trees, 390 gallons of oil, 7000 gallons of water, and 4100 kwh of energy. It also eliminates 60 pounds of air-polluting emissions and saves 8 cubic feet of landfill space. That’s a BIG benefit to receive for changing to a product that is as good (or better) than the product you use now!

Change to Remanufactured Printer Consumables

It has been agreed that where remanufactured printer products (recycled) are available we will move to them as they offer a more cost effective alternative to originals and also assist the Council in meeting the green agenda.

Currently we use Supplies Team for original printer consumables.  This framework finishes in March 2012.  In the short term we request that you order all remanufactured printer consumables from Supplies Team. We are confident that the remanufactured products quality from Supplies Team is as good as the originals. We have also asked them only to supply remanufactured cartridges when they are available.
