Lesson Ideas
1. Home to School Superhero
Aim
- Design a super hero to assist you with your home to school journey.
- Give the superhero a name.
- Draw them, colour them in, label and explain their powers.
Resources
- Paper
- Pencil
- Colouring pens, pencils, paint
- Classroom
Explanation
Superheroes can be in any shape or form, from the Superman type to a small pet. It is important to make sure the students still complete the home to school journey; the super hero is there to assist with the journey. The other key point is to ensure they have relevant powers. Do students need to fly to school, or have rocket boots to get to school at the speed of light? No guns or weapons either please!
Students can work in groups or individually, Art work can be in any form. Send them in and we can get them displayed on the web-site.
Enjoy!
2. Travel Gadget
Same type of idea as above but this time design a gadget to assist you with your home to school journey.
You may find a lot of students will go for apps for smart phones. Some of the apps are great, but the distraction of using the phone while walking to school or waiting for a bus can be very dangerous.
Can the gadget be something the student can use at school? A school bag, a pencil case or a school blazer with gadgets in the pockets!
Again, draw them, colour them and label the gadgets up. Send them in and we can display them.
3. Moving up Lesson
Aim
These lessons are aimed at year 6 students before they make the transition to senior school. The aim is to give the students information and travel tips for their home to school journey to their new school. The lesson is best delivered in the summer term.
Resources
- Bus pass and leaflets received by students who receive free home to school transport.
- Information on entitlement to free home to school transport.
- Road safety advice.
- Max Respect Bookmarks.
- Any space where the students are comfortable.
Explanation
This lesson is best delivered by the Max Respect Officer. The school would have received a letter via email inviting them to take advantage of a free visit from Max Respect to talk to the year 6 students about their travel to senior school. Letters are normally emailed after the Easter holidays.
Lessons last about an hour and are booked on a first come first served basis. They are especially useful where the students will be using the bus to get to school for first time.
Lessons are fun and full of useful information. Each student will receive a Max Respect bookmark at the end of the lesson.
4. Art and Design Competition
See poster in Art and Design Competition section. Competition normally runs from November to end of January, but posters can be submitted any time of year and we will just keep them until the following years competition if necessary. (Please note if you send posters in between February and July the students contact details will need to be for the following academic year. We need to make sure we can notify the winners!)
