Lincolnshire Dormouse Group
Formed in 2010 to attract new trainees and helpers for dormouse monitoring, and to increase the manpower available for dormouse habitat management. Previously, the monitoring relied on a much smaller number of regular volunteers, but with the animals spreading into new woods, and the possibility of a new release shortly, it became clear that more help is needed.
The Group means monthly through the year, alternating between Saturday and Sunday each month. In winter we carry out rotational coppice management, to ensure that there is always ideal habitat available, together with path clearing (especially bramble!) so that we can reach the boxes in summer. Between April and October we aim to check a set number of boxes and tubes each month, recording the presence of nests and dormice, and taking measurements to check the health of any animals present.
Currently the Group has 9 trainees and as many helpers, with 12-15 members turning out on average each month. More members very welcome! Sessions are listed in the Lincolnshire Limewoods “What’s On” programme
