The project focuses on the earthworks of the medieval moats in the centre of the village of Wragby. The moated site is one of two early medieval manors of Wragby recorded in the Domesday Book and was the centre of a substantial estate in the 11th century.
The remaining earthworks form two platforms surrounded by a series of large ditches. The site is a Scheduled Monument.
Members of Wragby Heritage Group have been involved in developing an interpretation board at the Moats to provide information to local residents and visitors about the history of the site. The project has included:
- Examination and interpretation of aerial photographs
- A geophysical survey of the moat platforms to identify any buildings or other evidence for the internal layout of the Moats
- Documentary research into the ownership and development of the manorial estate and medieval settlement in Wragby.
The interpretation panel is extremely informative with an aerial photograph showing the Moats, churchyard and surrounding earthworks, artist’s impression of how Wragby may have looked in the 15th century and images of local archaeological finds.
Wragby Moats can be accessed from Cemetery Lane or Mill View Lane in Wragby. There is permissive access to the site along with three public footpaths which cross the site. Wragby moat.
