Rescue teams from across the country will be coming to Lincoln to hone their skills in the country’s biggest and most prestigious firefighter event, hosted by Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue.
The UK Rescue Challenge will see 130 teams compete against each other in a series of simulated rescues designed to test their skills to the limit. And visitors to Lincoln can watch the action.
Over two days, the teams will be challenged to save casualties in a range of mock incidents. The main challenge will involve fifty teams competing to rescue casualties from a car crash in 20 minutes.
Other demonstrations in the competitive training event will include rescues from water, a high-rise building using the University of Lincoln’s atrium, and a collapsed structure.
It’s the first time in the event’s 23-year history that a water challenge has featured in the line-up. It will take place on Brayford Pool using Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue’s new boats, which form one of the UK’s biggest flood-response fleets.
Dave Ramscar, chief fire officer from Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, says:
“Every day of the year, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue stands ready to respond to calls for help. But it’s not just flames that we tackle. Our specialist teams are on hand to deal with incidents like collapsed buildings, car crashes and international disasters. The Rescue Challenge will give you the opportunity to see them put their finely-honed skills into action, alongside other teams from across the UK. We’re very proud to be hosting the event, which will be a great showcase of the world-renowned quality of our nation’s fire service.”
Steve Apter, chairman of the UK Rescue Organisation, says:
“The UK Rescue Challenge is the culmination of hours of dedicated training and honing of skills across a wide range of technical skills. It’s a world-class event, showcasing the pinnacle of the nation’s rescue expertise.”
As well as the excitement of watching the rescue teams in action, there’ll also be plenty of fun activities going on, including the chance to meet Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue’s life-saving rescue dogs.
A graffiti artist, climbing wall, street performers, street first aid, and a fly-past by the Red Arrows are just some of the other goings-on, along with the opportunity to find out about a firefighting career and get fire safety advice.
The Rescue Challenge is being hosted by Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue on behalf of the UK Rescue Organisation. It takes place around the University of Lincoln and the Brayford Pool from 10am until 4pm on 24 and 25 August.
