Word Map

Word Map

Word maps are excellent for supporting new vocabulary especially more technical words that are abstract, long and can often sound similar e.g. ‘condensation, evaporation, precipitation’. Word maps explore the semantic (word meaning) and phonological knowledge (word structure) at the same time. A word map uses similar principles as a mind map but it examines just one word.

Use pictures and colours to make the word map more memorable and keep the structure constant so that the student can start to use word maps independently. Keep the word maps so that the students can refer back to them.
