General Strategies

  • Be explicit. e.g. explain ”This is what we do” rather than expect the student to understand by observing the model.
  • Give a positive instruction e.g. “Please sit down” rather than “Don’t wander around”.
  • Give a direct instruction such as ‘Please sit down’ rather than indirect, ‘Do you want to sit down?’
  • Consider whether the style of communication is appropriate to the group as a whole.
  • Follow up instructions individually.
  • Use a social use of language programme or a communication group in order to address specific issues.
  • Use a pen portrait.
  • Email all staff
  • Use social stories
