Are the student’s Recording Skills Accurate?
No
Is it a spelling issue?
Does the student:
- Tell you what he wants to write
- Remember what it was he wanted to say
- Make bizarre spelling attempts
- Use a limited set of words he can spell
- Produce a large volume of work but makes phonetic spelling errors
Suggested strategies:
- Spelling prompt card
- Syllable awareness
- This is how we say it, this is how we write it
- Spell checker
- Phonological awareness practise, e.g. starters, Sound Linkage (Hatcher), word banks, vocabulary books
Is it a language issue?
Does the student:
- Have difficulty generating ideas
- Generate a lot of irrelevant ideas
- Have difficulty sequencing his ideas
- Forget what he wants to say
- Have difficulty thinking of the words
- Have difficulty focusing on key points
Suggested strategies:
- Colour coded schemes, e.g. Narrative (Black Sheep) and Colourful Semantics
- Spidergram
- Task plan
- Story plan
- Writing prompt card
- Mind maps
