Play sites open across the county
Lincolnshire County Council has been successful in a Playbuilder bid which will bring £1,131,000 of funding to the county for fixed play equipment.
The funding will see play sites open across the county in the North Kesteven, Boston, South Kesteven, West Lindsey, South Holland and East Lindsey districts by 31st March 2009 with more sites opening across the county in the next two years.
The play sites will be free, open to the public and will provide play for all children as part of a three year investment from the Department for Children Schools and Families (DCSF).
Children's centre campaign
A new campaign has been launched to raise awareness of the services and support available to parents and carers at the county’s 36 children’s centres. The campaign runs from 19th January until 5th April and sees a series of radio adverts on Lincs FM. Billboards and posters are also being used to advertise the centres across the county.
Lincolnshire THINK Teenage Text Service Success
A text service that was launched by the Lincolnshire Tackling Teenage Pregnancy team is being piloted in London this April.
Enfield, Kensington and Chelsea, and Hammersmith and Fulham boroughs are piloting the THINK text service after its success in Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire last year.
The service allows teenagers to text an advisor anonymously for confidential information and advice about a range of issues, including relationships and sex, how to resist peer pressure, puberty, and where to go for local help and support.
Teenagers aged 13 to 19 simply text 84465 which spells out the word THINK on their mobile phone keypad.
Jan Lowis, Teenage Pregnancy Project Manager, said: “THINK has proved to be really successful in providing advice and support to young people in Lincolnshire.
"We're a large rural county so access to traditional services can sometimes be difficult for young people. Text messaging is an ideal way of communicating with them because it is both portable and accessible."
Lincolnshire Youth Cabinet elections
Young people in the county's schools, libraries, and Connexions centres have been busy voting in this year's Lincolnshire Youth Cabinet election.
Voting slips are still coming in but it is estimated that thousands of young people voted between 23rd-27th February for candidates standing for the available seats in the East Lindsey, West Lindsey, South Kesteven and City of Lincoln districts.
Candidates will be informed on 17th March and the results will be announced on 20th March. The successful applicants will sit in the cabinet for two years before they must stand for re-election if they wish to continue.
For more information on the Cabinet please contact Andrew Garbutt on andrew.garbutt@lincolnshire.gov.uk or 01522 550757. Alternatively, more information can be found on www.c4yp.co.uk after 20th March.
