 Alkborough Tower Mill - 30 March 2002 |
Grid reference SE883215
Until at least 1853 a post mill stood here but at some time after this a tower mill was built on top of the original roundhouse wall. The mill ceased work by wind in 1916 but continued to work by engine for a little while.
The tower stands roofless and. Now that the tar has worn off the tower and most of the internal plaster has fallen off it is possible to see the join between roundhouse and tower clearly. The original piers have been cut back flush with the wall, except under the floor, which they helped to support. The holes for the projecting crosstrees and quarter bars have been crudely filled in with brickwork. The floors contain re-used timber from the post mill and two posts are made from a common sail whip.
