Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue's Andy Whitfield has a new nickname in the office - the Jolly Green Giant. The 6ft 7in Operations Support Manager has pioneered a number of innovative, environmentally sustainable projects at fire stations in the county - and now needs your votes after being shortlisted for the Council Worker of the Year in the Green Award category.
Andy has been the central figure in installing new, green technologies at Bardney community fire station, including a wind turbine, a water collection system and solar panels. He has also installed solar panels at Lincoln North, Lincoln South, Spalding, Skegness and Market Rasen stations.
There is also a five-year plan to build three similar 'eco' stations, beginning with Wragby, where construction is set to start in July.
In recognition of this, Andy has been chosen as a finalist in the Council Worker of the Year awards in the 'green' category. The winner will be chosen by public vote and anyone can show their support by visiting http://www.localgovernmentchannel.com/awards/c/green_award_2010/v/andy_whitfield/ and voting online.
You can also vote by SMS text message by texting LGATV 3 AndyW to 80039 - remember the space before and after the number 3. Alternatively, you can print out this voting form and gather signatures in support of Andy, and return these to any fire station in Lincolnshire, or to Mary Maggs, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Headquarters, South Park Avenue, Lincoln, LN5 8EL. Internet and SMS text votes can be made until the 8th July, and paper voting forms are to be submitted by the 21st June 2010.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Dave Ramscar says of Andy: "We are incredibly proud of having staff that are so committed to forwarding the Service's environmental agenda. Andy's personal enthusiasm for this project makes him an ideal candidate for this year's Green Award nomination."
